Large Lamp Base
Large Lamp Base
Wheel-thrown terracotta lamp base, slipped in white. The decoration was carved freehand with a loop tool while the clay was leather hard, revealing the darker body beneath. Once dry, the piece is biscuit-fired to 1000°C; an amber glaze is then poured on by hand and fired again to 1100°C.
My influences are wide ranging — at root, a cumulative love of the history of ceramics: 12th–17th century Persian painted pottery, Iznik Ottoman ceramics, Imari ware, Delft ware, the forms and traditions of British studio and medieval pottery. A magpie's hoard. What connects them, I think, is a love of the handmade mark: the evidence that someone, somewhere, made something alive with their hands.
Fitted with a brass bayonet light fitting and linen flex.
