Large Striped Vase (SECOND)

Large Striped Vase (SECOND)

Sale Price:£170.00 Original Price:£280.00

Wheel-thrown in speckled stoneware and hand-painted with porcelain slip and cobalt stripes, glaze-fired to 1250°C

This vase is sold as a second, there is a fine crack on the narrow waste between the body and the foot, it is purely aesthetic, and the vase is still watertight/ structurally sound. See close-ups for details.

A generous vase with pulled scroll handles — functional as well as decorative, a good size for displaying a large bunch of flowers. Used here with a flower frog in the base. As with all handmade work, each piece is entirely its own: small variations and gentle imperfections are part of the process, not in spite of it. Where the glaze sits thicker, you may notice some natural crazing over time.

My influences are broad — essentially a cumulative love of the history of ceramics: 12th–17th century Persian painted pottery, Iznik Ottoman ceramics, Imari ware, Delft ware, the forms and traditions of British studio and medieval pottery. A magpie's hoard. What connects them, I think, is a love of the handmade mark: the evidence that someone, somewhere, made something alive with their hands.
