Terracotta Oval Platter
Terracotta Oval Platter
Wheel-thrown in terracotta clay, adjusted fresh off the wheel into an oval, hand-painted with white slip. Glazed in an auburn amber glaze, with black cobalt snake brushwork.
A genuinely useful platter — equally at home in daily use for serving food, fruit, or puddings, as it is displayed decoratively on a side table or hung on the wall.
Over time and use, some crazing may appear as fine crackles in the glaze.
My influences are broad — a cumulative love of the history of ceramics: 12th–17th century Persian painted pottery, Iznik Ottoman ceramics, Imari ware, Delft ware, the forms and traditions of British studio and medieval pottery. A magpie's hoard. What connects them, I think, is a love of the handmade mark — the evidence that someone, somewhere, made something alive with their hands.
Care: Handwash only.
