Large Sailing Ship Platter
Large Sailing Ship Platter
Wheel-thrown in speckled stoneware clay, this dish is hand-painted using porcelain slip and underglazes, then glaze-fired to 1250 °C. It is subsequently overpainted with 24-carat gold lustre and refired at a lower temperature to permanently fuse the metallic detailing to the surface.
Designed to be displayed on the wall or used as a striking statement platter, the piece reinterprets 17th-century Iznik plates depicting European sailing ships produced for the Ottoman elite. Every element of the composition has been painted freehand, with fine sgraffito details carefully etched into the surface using a pin blade.
The glaze has been intentionally applied thickly, resulting in areas of craquelure similar to those found on historical ceramics from over 500 years ago. This crackling is purely aesthetic and does not affect the structural integrity of the piece.
